BOOK REVIEW: Revival Season

Revival Season by Monica West

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

TW: Infant death, domestic violence, language

Revival Season is one of those books that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

Revival Season is Monica West’s debut novel about a deeply religious family, The Hortons, and young Miriam’s quest to understand her preacher father Samuel. The family travels around the country attending tent revivals, and Reverend Horton is known far and wide for his “healing” abilities. Everything has gone well so far, until a disastrous encounter with a blind man leaves Reverend Horton’s life and career hanging in the balance.

Along with the Hortons’ travels, Miriam is also caring for her disabled sister Hannah and is constantly worried about her mother, who is recovering from a great loss. Miriam almost seems to take on all of the pains and worries of her entire family.

This book was so beautiful and rich, and West’s writing was perfection.
